Sensei Aphique Woods-Joseph

About Me.

Instructor Aphique Woods-Joseph, also known as Sensei Aphique, is a testament to the rewards of hard work. Born in St. Vincent and relocated to Crown Heights, Brooklyn at the age of 10, Aphique faced social challenges despite excelling academically. His early years were marked by frequent fights, but he found solace and discipline in martial arts, starting with the Beacon After School Program at P.S 138.

Under the mentorship of Sensei Jackie, Aphique began to channel his energies positively, eventually training at the Kan Cobra USA dojo, where he immersed himself in lineage karate-do. He became a member of the Kan Cobra USA demo team, participating in live performances throughout NYC. He also competed in tournaments nationally and internationally. This intensive training ignited a deep passion for the arts within him. The Kan Cobra USA dojo closed as at the start of high school. Still Aphique's passion led him to continued training with his instructor at various locations. It was also during this time period where he began to hone his martial art teaching skill as he also assisted his instructor with demo presentation and classes. These classes would take place in public schools. Daycare, churches, community centers and Family shelter location. That experience helped Aphique to keep focus and stay disciplined as he navigated life's challenges throughout his teenage years.

Aphique's dedication to martial arts remained unwavering. In college he continued training and started independently teaching Inner Force After School & summer program. After graduating, Aphique furthered his teaching career independently and by collaborating with his instructor, other contracted /non-contracted DOE vendors in schools across New York City. This journey culminated a 15year teaching resume, with training program successfully completing programs in 23 public school to date. Students range from pre k through high school; located throughout Brooklyn, Manhattan & Queens. His teaching serves as mentorship, fitness program, performing arts, and self-defense training during regular or after-school hours.

COVID-19 was hard on many martial art programs due to the banned-on group gathering and practice. Many martial arts school programs struggled, and a great number of NYC martial arts schools shut down. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 lockdown, Aphique adapted by transitioning to online teaching and later serving in person at DOE learning labs. His commitment to helping others led him to expand his services, mentor & site-coordinating a 21st-century school. In 2024, Aphique responded to the call from principals for him to keep serving now as a NYC DOE school vendor. Determined to continue providing quality guidance and support to others as he once received and benefited from. Sensei combines all the knowledge, understanding passed on to him along with his own experience to teach other ways to foster a better version of themselves through martial arts practice His journey exemplifies the rewards of perseverance and hard work, showcasing that dedication truly pays off.
